The W395 Walkman is a typical slider targeted at the younger crowd, though we must admit we like the shiny matte chassis on this Sony Ericsson. At 96 x 47 x 14.9mm, the W395 has a tiny footprint and feels equally lightweight in our pocket at 96g.
Below the 2-inch 176 x 220-pixel screen is the usual array of buttons. These include a dedicated Walkman key and a directional pad that doubles as navigation controls for the music player.
Sliding open the phone reveals the conventional 3-by-4 alphanumeric keypad. This is a single slab of plastic with subtle ridges that define the individual rows of keys.
Basic connectivity options include quad-band GSM, Bluetooth stereo for steaming music to a pair of wireless earbuds and a proprietary port for connecting to a headset.
On the entertainment front, there's a 2-megapixel camera, FM radio, built-in stereo speakers located at the back of the handset and three preinstalled games--NitroStreet Racing, Guitar Rock Tour and Sudoku.
TrackID, a long-time feature of Sony Ericsson music phones, lets you record a few seconds of an unfamiliar song and the app will search the Gracenote Mobile MusicID database for the name of the tune, artist who sang it, and album it belongs to. It's great for moments where you're trying to recall a song.
Like the F305 gaming phone, the W395 doesn't come with a bundled software CD. You'll have to go to Sony Ericsson's support site to download the Media Manager software to manage music, videos, pictures and podcasts that reside on your PC and the W395. Alternatively, the supplied USB cable lets you connect to the PC in mass storage mode, so you can simply drag-and-drop data, which is a more hassle-free way.
