Mobile Phones - A Potted History
Mobile phones are an integral part of our life today, but just 25 years ago, they were almost unheard of.

The past two or three decades have seen incredible advances in technology, from mobile phones to social networking sites. We live our lives completely differently now that we're better connected to our work and our homes, and mobile phones are constantly adapting to make our lives easier.

Mobile Phones - Then and Now

The ability to communicate wirelessly isn't as new as you might think - like all technologies, it's been used in a military and commercial context for many years. The real revolution in wireless technology is its application to the consumer market, where demand for mobile phones to enhance our lives has driven designers and manufactures to compete to provide smaller, lighter and more reliable solutions:
  • The first mobile phone network - depending on your definition of "mobile phones", there are several different theories as to when the first mobile phone was used. Between the 1950s and 1970s, a great deal of research and development was invested in wireless communication and how it could be used on a wider scale than just four or five people within a relatively small area. It wasn't until the early 1970s that engineers worked out how to hand off a call from one wireless cell to another, allowing people to be connected at greater distances.
  • Mobile phone generations - development in mobile phones and the technology that makes them work is usually referred to in generations. First generation mobiles were unwieldy, heavy and had a short battery life. They did allow you to make calls without any wired connection, but they were expensive to buy and rarely seen. Second generation mobile phones were introduced in the 1990s, which is when the global market for mobile phones really took off. Better connectivity and reception led to an increased interest in the technology and subsequently, the phones themselves needed to be more attractive - both in terms of usability and practicality. Lighter, smaller phones were needed. Gradually, mobile phones changed so that antennae were integrated into the handset rather than needing to be pulled out to make a call, SMS text messaging was introduced and more bandwidth made available so that networks could handle more traffic.
  • Third generation mobile phones - many of the phones that we use today are third generation mobile phones. They operate on networks that are faster and offer more interactivity, so that we can browse the internet, send pictures to our friends and much more. Touch screen technology is the latest buzz in the mobile phone world, but you can be sure that phone designers and network engineers are working at the next level to improve on what we have today.
