The link to mobile phones and cancer has been a long-debated one. But should pay as you go phones and contract mobiles carry a warning?
A legislator in America from the state of Maine has called for mobile phones to carry warnings, similar to cigarettes, warning that overuse could be linked to brain cancer. The bill would force mobile phone manufacturers to put warnings on their pay as you go phones and contract mobiles. And like cigarette warnings, there will be particular attention paid towards the more vulnerable - children and pregnant women. The warnings could encourage users to keep phones at a distance from their body and head. But the Federal Communications Commission has said the radiation from all mobile phones is safe.
Research into Mobile Phone Use
The risk of cancer and mobile phones has been on-going. The pay as you go phone and contract phone market is a hugely lucrative one, and any suggestion that mobiles could cause cancer would be catastrophic for the industry. But mobile phone manufacturers are hoping a recent study into the risks will help put fears to rest once and for all. Scientists at the Institute of Cancer Epidemiology in Copenhagen carried out research into brain cancer incidents among the over 20s in Finland, Norway, Sweden and Denmark. The study revealed no increase in the incidence of brain tumours during the years immediately following the introduction of pay as you go phones and contract mobiles into these Nordic countries.
Scientists Show no Short or Medium Term Risk
Those who use pay as you go phones are more likely to use their phone significantly less than contract users, and as such, may be more relaxed about the concern around the cancer risk. But for those who spend their lives glued to their mobile phones, the study will offer some relief. The study found 59,984 people from a population of 16 million were diagnosed with the most popular brain cancers between 1974 and 2003. Mobile phones were prevalent in Nordic countries in the mid-90s, but the incidence of brain cancer remained static between 1998 and 2003. Some people may opt for pay as you go mobiles because they don't use their phone that frequently. But for those whose lives now revolve around their mobile - and more importantly, their children's lives - this kind of research offers invaluable peace of mind. The findings back other studies that have shown mobile phone use doesn't increase the short or medium term risk of developing brain tumours.
