In the past couple of years Sony has been perhaps slightly behind the curve when it came to smartphone feature. There handsets always seemed to come out at a time when it's competitors were releasing new and improved models. The new Xperia Z changes all that and once again puts Sony at the forefront of mobile technology. The Xperia Z is hands down one of the best looking phone we've ever laid eyes on, with an impossibly thin 7.9 mm waistline. The front and back of the phone are covered in unbroken sheets of toughened glass and the edges feature metallic strips and circular highlights. It all looks very sophisticated and futuristic although the glass back panel could be a bit of a finger print magnet. However, one advantage the Xperia Z has is that it is both dust proof and water resistant to the IP5X industry standard. This means that you can use it the rain and pour water all over it as demoed in the video. This sort of ruggedness is usually only found in specialized handsets, so it's nice to see it applied to a range topping mass market smartphone.
The Sony Xperia Z is the first high end phone of what is sure to be many this year that feature a Full HD resolution screen. That's 1920 x 1080 or 2 million total pixels all crammed into a 5 inch screen size! The resulting pixel density is an absolutely insane 440 ppi. To put that into perspective the Apple iPhone's 'retina' display only has 326 ppi and that is already considered pretty much flawless. Some may argue that such a high pixel density is pointless as the human eye simply cannot tell the difference... Whether or not that is the case the Xperia Z's display is simply gorgeous with great contrast and superb colour reproduction. And it is pin sharp no matter how closely you look at it. In fact the only blemish to be found is the mediocre viewing angles, although these aren't particularly important on a smartphone.
Sony smartphones have always boasted great cameras and the Xperia Z ups the game once again. It features a 13 megapixel back side illuminated Exmor RS sensor that delivers superb low light performance and intelligent auto mode. It also features a world first for a mobile phone camera and that is HDR video recording. HDR stands for High Dynamic Range and is a technique that allows you to capture superior images when a scene contains both bright and dark object. Lots of phones have offered HDR photo capture but the Xperia Z is the first to apply the technology to video recording. The result is incredible results when filming in variable lighting conditions and really does make a difference. The camera is also very good at choosing the correct settings to use for a given image, leaving you with more time to think about timing and composition without needing to worry about the nitty gritty details.
The Xperia Z uses a Qualcomm S4 Pro processor that has 4 cores running at 1.5GHz. In other words more than enough power to run any app under the sun, or even a whole bunch of them at once. 2GB of RAM provides plenty of room for apps to run side by side and the user interface is smooth and quick. The Xperia Z runs Android 4.1 Jellybean which, while not the absolute latest version, is still fast and feature packed. The Z has plenty of connectivity options including all the usual WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS. It also has NFC (Near Field Communications) that lets it easily pair with other devices just by touching them back to back. You can then share pictures, music and even your display with other devices.
