The iPhone 5 is one of, if not the most, anticipated handsets of the year. After the iPhone 4S last year, which many consider to be a bit of a disappointment, Apple has come up with something truly amazing that will put it firmly back in first place. Apple hasn’t been afraid to shake things up with the iPhone 5 and plenty has changed since last year’s 4S. Let’s run down the headline changes and most important new features.

The first thing you’ll notice is the bigger screen. The iPhone 4S had a 3.5 inch screen and this has been the standard ever since the first iPhone launched back in 2007. However, in a world dominated by Android handsets with massive screens in the 4.5 to 5 inch range the iPhone was really starting to look a bit small. The iPhone 5’s screen hasn’t grown quite to those gargantuan proportions though. It now measures 4 inches diagonally, a good compromise between increasing space and maintaining easy one handed operation. This has been achieved by stretching the current screen vertically so it is taller and has a wider aspect ratio when viewed horizontally. This makes the screen better for viewing videos and media as you won’t get black letterbox bars top and bottom. There is also enough room for an extra row of icons on the home screen. The screen resolution has also been increased in order to keep the same pixel density and preserve Apples ‘Retina display’ moniker. It now measures 1136 x 640, up from the previous 960 x 640 of the iPhone 4S. By keeping the same number of horizontal pixels Apple should be able to ensure that the new iPhone is compatible with any and all existing apps in the appstore.

A bigger screen necessitates a bigger phone and the iPhone 5 has grown in length but has simultaneously gotten thinner. It now measures just 7.6mm thin and is, according to Apple, the thinnest smartphone in the world. Design wise it takes a lot of inspiration from its predecessor but the body is now made out of aluminium rather than the slightly fragile glass construction of the iPhone 4S. One important change that has had to be made is a new redesigned dock connector. It’s now much smaller and is reversible meaning that you can plug the cable in upside down and it will still work. The downside of a new connector is that it means the new iPhone 5 is incompatible with the majority of current iPhone accessories. Apple has released an adapter so you can use your existing cables but it would have been nice if Apple finally switched to the industry standard micro USB connector.

Power has also been increased with the iPhone 5 packing a new Apple A6 processor. Apple says that this twice the processing power and twice the graphical power of the A5 chip found inside the 4S. This means that apps open quicker and games play smoother. In truth though the iPhone 4S was already pretty much flawless and your likely to notice a huge difference in overall performance. The A5 processor in the iPhone 4S is built on a 45nm process (this refers to the size of the transistors that make up the chip). The new A6 processor is built on a 32nm process or smaller. The smaller the transistor the less energy it uses, thus the chip can perform the same task while using less electricity and draining less power from the battery.

The iPhone 5 comes running the latest version of iOS. This is iOS6 and was announced and detailed earlier this summer at the Apple World Wide Developers Conference. It’s packed with lots of new features and improvements. For instance iOS6 will see the debut of Apples own mapping service. Previously Apple devices have all used Google Maps for their native maps app. However, apple wants to distance itself from its long-time rival and become more self-reliant. The new maps service should feature improved performance and turn by turn navigation built in. Facebook is now integrated directly into the OS allowing you to upload photos and post status updates easier than ever. Previously you had to be connected to WiFi in order to video chat using the FaceTime app. With iOS6 you can now use it over 3G networks meaning you can video chat no matter where you are. The web browsing experience has also been improved with open tabs synced between all your Apple devices and the ability to save webpages offline for later reading. The voice activated assistant: Siri has also been improved. It now understands more languages and can answer more questions. Sports, films, restaurants, these are some of the new things that Siri now knows about. You can even launch apps now, just by asking for it.
